California's Governor States He Is Evaluating a Presidential Campaign for 2028

Gavin Newsom, a prominent Democratic figure, has indicated that he will decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.

"Absolutely, I would be lying otherwise," the governor commented when questioned about contemplating a presidential run following the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."

The governor's time in office as governor wraps up in the start of 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. However, he noted that any determination is not imminent.

"It's up to destiny," he remarked.

Increased Visibility as a Administration Opponent

He has emerged as a high-profile critic of the current federal leadership, leveraging his digital presence and championing a proposition that would expand the party's representation in Congress in following Republican redistricting efforts. This action has made him a target from adversaries.

Controversy Over Funds

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor is indifferent about the state's residents in a Sunday interview on Fox News. Duffy announced plans to cut government money from California and threatened suspending the authority to issue commercial driver's licenses.

"I'm about to pull a significant sum from the state," he stated, in the wake of a recent deadly accident in California involving an unauthorized commercial driver that caused three deaths and injured individuals.

His administration pointed out that the federal government had reauthorized the driver's employment multiple times, which enabled him to secure a commercial driver's license under federal law.

The transportation secretary had previously stated he was holding back additional funds from the state for not enforcing language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.

Strong Response from the Team

"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand national statutes," his administration responded in a previous release countering the funding warnings. "For now, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: California truck drivers had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."

Voter Sentiment and Political Future

A this month's survey showed that a majority of the party and a significant portion of the electorate said that the governor must consider running for the White House in 2028. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has risen to an average of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has fallen from an average of over 40% to current figures.

Earlier this year, Newsom stated while traveling several swing states that he had "uncertainty" about his plans for the next presidential election.

He noted his earlier challenges, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.

"The idea that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was typically not at the front – that such a possibility is discussed is, in and of itself, remarkable," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I await who steps forward in the next election and who answers the call. And that's the question for the voters."
