Champions League Action Tonight: Marseille v Newcastle & Additional Games
Greetings to another night of exciting European Cup football. Nine matches are planned for tonight, including 3 British clubs in action. The Blues face Barça in the key fixture of the evening, while Newcastle visit Marseille and City host Bayer Leverkusen.
Current Standings
It's the halfway stage of the group phase, so the rankings is taking form. All six English clubs are currently in the top 12, but there are only 2 points between fifth and sixteenth place, thus there's a whiff of snakes and ladders about the entire situation. Everything is to play for.

- Ajax 0-1 Benfica (5.45pm)
- Galatasaray 0-0 Union SG (5.45pm)

Previous Encounters
The sole past encounter involving Newcastle and Marseille was the Europa League semi-final of 2003-04, won by an emerging star from CĂ´te d'Ivoire. Bayer Leverkusen and Manchester City have never met before. Chelsea and Barcelona have a peedie bit of history.
Early Match Updates
Only a single goal in the first half of the two early games. Samuel Dahl's 6th-minute goal has given Benfica under Mourinho a one-nil advantage at Ajax.
Newcastle’s Trip to Marseille
Although The Magpies traveled to the south of France coming off their restorative 2-1 home English top-flight victory against City on the weekend, and having defeated Union SG, Benfica and Athletic Bilbao in the Champions League, their only away victory since early April came in the Belgian capital at Union Saint-Gilloise.
It's not that Eddie Howe was overly keen to talk about the psychological aspect of this away form issue. “The European Cup is different to domestic games,” said the manager, whose side are 6th in the Champions League standings, with nine points from a available 12 and direct progression to the knockout phase almost within touching distance. “I am not sure if you can compare them.”
We have a separate live blog for Barcelona vs Chelsea. Scott Murray, the MBM equivalent of Diego Maradona is on duty for that.
