No less than 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Biggest Law Enforcement Operation on Gangs
A minimum of 64 individuals lost their lives in a police operation cracking down on the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's history.
Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during Operation Containment in the Alemão and Penha districts, government representatives reported. In excess of 80 individuals were detained.
Fierce clashes broke out when about 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command countered with shooting, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, authorities confirmed.
The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "horrified" by the security action, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".
