Pacific Bluefin Tuna Fetches Historic Bid of 3.2 million dollars at Tokyo Auction
A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the year.
The successful offer for the 243-kilogram fish came from the parent firm of a popular sushi chain, which operates restaurants across the country and overseas.
"An inaugural tuna heralds good luck," remarked the business owner, a regular bidder at the traditional January sale.
Referred to as the King of Tuna, this entrepreneur is noted for making high bids for bluefin tuna at these high-profile new year auctions.
Auction Shock and Record-Setting Past
Following the auction, the winner admitted to journalists that he was "astonished at the final price," noting, "I expected we would be able to buy it a little cheaper, but the price soared rapidly."
This most recent acquisition surpasses his previous historic purchases:
- He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He paid 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).
Despite once remarking that he thought he "overdid it," he has now proceeded to shatter his personal record another time.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is notoriously characterized by exceptionally high prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a separate culinary group, which indicated the fish would be available at its locations across Japan.
The frenetic energy at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

The multi-million-dollar tuna was promptly processed for customers at the bidder's sushi establishments immediately after the auction concluded.
