Vicky McClure are set to reprise their characters in the popular crime series

The beloved police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th season, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-part series written by the show's creator starts production in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The previous season wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been widespread ever since, but official word only arrived this week.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for busts of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to become a offender.

However, his case could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, plot details suggested.

In a statement, the creator commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a new installment."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

The BBC haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of season six brought the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the network announced on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
