The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

Overall, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the music selection.

This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.

Personally, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when co-founder the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Including singing from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.

Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have a few surprises and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are available on Spotify and the video site.
